MS Word, Chapter 5, Form Letters, Mailing Letters, and Directories

For this week's topic, I have designated this space for you to discuss questions, feedback, suggestions, etc. with your classmates. All are encouraged to post and reply to one another's comments. I'd like you to become more interactive with one another as a group. Keep in mind that this will count toward your weekly class participation.

  2. The webpage you will need to go to is:

    http://www.scsite.com/catalog/product.cfm?category=Office%20Suites&subcategory=Microsoft%20Office%202007&isbn=978-1-4188-4333-5

#8- Word Data Files Chapters 4-6 is the link you want to click

When you click the link it will ask you to save or open the file. Save the file and then find the correct file for the assignment based on what the book lists as the appropriate file.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Oh, thank you Sara I was so lost. Appreciate the help!

  4. The problem we are going to continue to have as we move through the differnent sections of our book, is that it is actually a combination of 2 books. So for Word, CH 1-3 were found under the "Introductory Concepts & Techniques" book, where you will need to look in the "Advanced Concepts" book for CH 4-6. I believe it will be similar when we work with Excel, Powerpoint, etc.

  5. Yes, I think that is why I was having such a difficult time finding the work but seeing as our professor is fully aware we are having issues with this I assume she will provide us with the links to help us out.

  6. dadorno, check your email, because I have already received an email from her with those links.

  7. Thanks, I did with the link but I only was able to open one of the assignments and I can't find the Lab1 I just was trying to find Ch5 Lab2 assignment and it is not in the file I downloaded from the link?

  8. This week's "In the Lab" assignment does not have a file to go with it; the link I posted was for last week's assignment and Krystal was correct in stating that Ms. Ferro emailed the link to the class earlier in the week.

To my understanding this week's In the Lab assignment will need to be created from a new, blank Word document.

  9. I find this text book to be extremely helpful. I thought I knew a lot about the Office 2007 programs but I definitely learn something new each assignment. Does anyone think this book is too easy or too difficult? I feel like it's a pretty good balance between the both.

  10. This is my third time getting "certified" in a MS Office suite (1997, & 2003 before this) and I am also learning a few new things here & there. I must say I'm pleasantly surprised that this wasn't a waste of time or a simply just a formality for my degree and that I'm actually getting something out of this course.

  12. I have gotten a lot out of these assignments. I believe the course book will be a helpful reference after this course is over.

  13. I agree with what Taylor said.
The text book is full of great information. I have learned so many new techniques on MS Word. There are some things I never knew about. For instance, I just learned about the "If field" in chapter 5, as well as how to set tab stops.
I have been learning a lot with the material from the text book and I expect to learn more.
The book is not too easy or too difficult to understand. I feel like you have to read the book to understand the material and not guess what to do. In my opinon, this text book is very useful for novice users to experienced users.

  14. I totally agree! I expected this class to be a breeze through, but I'm actually learning quite a bit. I'm really excited to move on to Excel, because I use it so often at work.

Has any one else found issues with the SAM grading? I had an issue in the last assignment where SAM was saying that it could not locate my letterhead, which was clearly there.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Has anyone found the the SAM automated grading to be overly critical? I think my submission was visually identical, but I most likely got there in a way that differed from the "script". Although I appreciate the technical nature of the training, I think the Word application's strength the flexiability ti offers to the end user.

  16. Mark and Krystel, I found the grading on SAM very tricky. At first I thought my letterhead looked exactly the same. I had a typo and it through it all off.

My exposure with Word was purely for composing documents without all the benefits of Word. I always thought it was necessary to go to an application like publisher to do fancier techniques. I wasn't aware of all that Word does offer, and it is a matter of becoming aware and practicing these steps. I like all the style galleries and working with shapes on the drawing canvas.

  17. Hi Class:
I agree that this book does a good job teaching material. I don't find it too easy or difficult to understand you just have to read before you try doing a lab.

I also thought I knew a lot when it came to Word but basically I only knew the basics. I will be able to use this class for all my other class assignment's.

Is anyone else a little worried about Access or Excel? I just feel like I knew a lot about Word before I started the chapter and since I don't know much about Access or Excel it might be more difficult.

  18. I have found this class to be more difficult than I had originally thought. I didn't realize how limited my computer skills really were, but I feel what I have learned and what I will learn is going to be extremely helpful in my college career as well as my future career. I have found the book to be very helpful, except when it came to finding the data files which was very frustrating. I have since received an email from the professor and was given the links.

As for the SAM grading I too found it to be overly critical. I sent the professor a copy of the work I had done and she said she would take it into consideration. I haven't received a grade for it yet, so I do not know if it helped or not.

I am a little worried about Access and Excel since I don't have any experience with them, but I feel I have a better rhythm for the work in this coarse so I feel it shouldn't be so bad.

I do have a question; Does any one know if there is a place on elearning where we can see our grades or do we just wait for an email? I know within SAM we are given grades, but I wasn't sure about the other work. If there isn't my suggestion would be that it would be nice to have one, so that it would be easier to keep tract of them.

  19. Hope
I agree with you, the Excel and Access programs might be hard, but hopefully the book will continue to provide enough step by step examples.

SAM grading is critical but I noticed that on your second or third submisions you can fix what SAM grades as wrong. As long as you do the steps according to how the book explains it then you should be okay.

Hope, have you noticed that the teacher will email you your grade for assignments?

  20. I am having trouble with the data source in lab 2 is that supposed to be opened on the same page as the letter or on a separate page? Also when I made the table with the spaces between the columns to look like the data table in the book the table wouldn’t fit in the margins. The lab steps aren’t that clear?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Mark yes I also found that SAM automated grading to be very strict. I also made an identical assignment but did some steps differently. I think that the SAM grading system is programmed to look for only one specific way of doing assignments

  22. In regards to Excel and Access, I have taken a similar course for the 2003 versions, and I found that the book continues to be just as helpful. It still offers all of the step-by-step instruction with all the examples and tips on different ways to do things. Whether you believe you are already proficient in these programs or are brand new to them, you will definitely take away quite a bit of new infromation.

After you made the table did you change the layout to LANDSCAPE. It should fit and then you can resize the rows to look like the book.

  24. In response to Kristin and Linda.
I didn't know that we were supposed to make the data source an actual table.
From what I understood of the lab 2 assignment on chapter 5, we had to type the data information in the data source field which is located whithin the word document.

Has anyone done it the same way I did it? or did I do it the wrong way?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Antonio,
Did you see step 10 on the top of the next page? That is the step that I made a table for.

    EVERYONE,
What has everyone sent to the professor for homework? I have an email out to her about what she wants to see but I haven't heard from her yet.
There is the form letter, labels, envelope, and table. So four attachments I believe.

  26. For week 4 homework assignment, I was not able to find any of the lab files on the website(from the cd that came with the book). Professor Ferro emailed me a link and I was still not able to find them. Same thing with this week. I am typing everything from scratch. Is anyone else having these problems?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Antonio and Kristin,
The step 3 in the Step by Step Mail Merge Wizard creates the table for you, if you select "type new list." This is explained on Pg. WD 322.

Kristin, you will also need to attach the data source in order for her to open the form letter correctly.

  28. For those of you who are intimidated by Access and Excel, let me just tell you that I was super intimidated by Word! This course makes it really simple to understand and the textbook walks you right through everything, which has helped me the most. So, if I can learn Word, you'll likely be able to learn Excel and Access.

Is anyone having trouble finding some of the fonts referenced in the assignments? I have Windows 7; I wonder if that's why I'm not finding them on my drop down list?

I'm not sure if this helps or not but for those with SAM grading issues, here's how I got through it; While reading/reviewing the chapters, I'd have Word open with my format indicator on. Following along in the book, I'd make my own version of theirs. When my document or format indicator didn't look like the books, I knew I'd missed a step and would fix it. The labs use the same criteria (pretty much) as the exercises, so practicing as you go might help with the particulars that SAM is looking for.

  29. I'm finding this course alot harder than i thought, sometimes just finding the right things on Word is difficult because I'm not sure I'm doing the whole assignment correctly. I also had trouble on Lab 3, trying to get the contributions? for the 50 less than or equal to? i dont get that part at all.

  30. Slauran3,

I have had difficulty with the IF field as well. Where you able to setup a multilevel list? I used the list button for the first time in this assignment.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I understand the IF than when I used visual basic. I found that to me a challenging part of this assignment. Does anyone have any tips I could use to get this function down pat?

  32. I was quite confussed this week with the lab assignment. I couldnt find the Diagnonal gradient something/something 2 in the letter portion. I followed the directions in the book 110% and did it 3 times. Still couldnt do it correctly so I just used another gradient. I find this course very difficult, each assignemnt takes me over 4-5 hrs. I wish I had done an in-house class on this as I feel it would be better suited for me.

Derek I agree with you I have been having trouble with some of the assignments also. I have used Microsoft Office many times and have taken a similar class (that was back in 2000) this program is suppposed to make the work easier and in some ways it does but in other's such as finding the Diagnol gradient I had a lot of trouble with that one to but I did finally find something similar in the text effects if you run the cursor over each one it tells you what it is, and like you I had to use a different gradient because the program didn't offer the diagnal one.

  34. Kristen, I haven't received a grade for any of the MS Word assignments I have done, and I have done them all. I have no idea how am doing in this class. Has anyone else received a grade on these lab assignments?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Your right Hope,
I only recieved a grade for that email we sent about staying in his over booked class. Have you brought this up to the professor yet?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I was having a hard time downloading the assignment because the website was only downloading chapters 1-3 but after looking at the blog I realized that I needed to use the other website. I was able to get the assignment done thanks to everyone who posted what should be done. Thank you!

  37. From Jen Medeiros:
    Hope,
You should send an email to the teacher. Because I wasn't getting grades either so I emailed her and it turned out she hadn't recieved some so I had to email them again. Even if she did get them it can't hurt just to make sure. Good luck

  38. Kristen,

I had missed step 10, that is why I didn't know we were suppose to do the database.

    Thank you for the help.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jen,
At least I know Im not the only one having a problem. I feel a lot better now. I did the same thing as you and ended up using a different gradient as well. Thanks for your input!
